Description
Days 1-6
Johannesburg/South Africa/Botswana
Follow the Panorama Route through the Mpumalanga Region on the way to the Kruger. In the park, play 'I Spy' with fellow travellers, spotting zebras, impalas and the many more animals that inhabit the landscape. Crossing the border to Botswana's Chobe National Park, check out the vast herds of elephants and take a leisurely cruise downriver. Hippos hanging out in the shallows are a common sight, as are majestic fish-eagles swooping for their catch of the day.
Days 7-13
Zambia/Malawi
Get your heart rate up in Livingstone, adventure sport capital of Africa, where everything from gorge swinging and abseiling to canoeing is available. A visit to the 'smoke that thunders' - Victoria Falls - is a must before continuing on to Malawi. Make camp by Lake Malawi and spend time here relaxing, swimming or meeting the friendly fishermen, fish traders and net makers who ply their trades on the sandy shores.
Days 14-20
Tanzania/Zanzibar
Pass through Mikumi National Park where giraffes are often seen foraging for food among the branches of prickly acacia trees. Afterwards, browse the curio markets of Dar es Salaam for excellent ebony wood carvings. Travel by ferry to the exotic island of Zanzibar and spend free time strolling the Arab-inspired streets of Stone Town, a labyrinth of mosques, palaces and bazaars. A spice tour is a sensory delight and diving offers a chance to discover an amazing underwater world, or just chill out on the coconut palm-fringed beaches.
Days 21-29
Tanzania/Kenya/Nairobi
Pass beneath the lofty peak of Mt Kilimanjaro and traverse the open plains of the Masai. Take note in Arusha, the halfway point between Cape Town and Cairo. There's an opportunity here to visit a Masai village to learn the traditions of this proud warrior tribe. Let an African snake wrap you up at the informative Snake Park and enjoy a sundowner at a lively bush bar. The Serengeti National Park is the next stop, site of the annual wildebeest migration and home to huge herds of herbivores. Spend a final night camping on the rim of the enormous Ngorongoro Crater, one of the best places to catch sight of a lion, before returning to civilisation in Nairobi.
