Days 1-2
Avignon and Orange
The walled city of Avignon has it all: a thriving art scene, Europe's largest Gothic palace, an ancient bridge and even its own nursery rhyme. Take the afternoon to stroll along the shopping streets and try delectable Provencal cuisine. A scenic city walk takes in the crumbling but beautiful Pont Saint-Benezet and the 14th century Palais des Papes, once home to French popes. For ruins from the region's illustrious Roman past, take the opportunity to see the amphitheatre on a visit to nearby Orange.
Day 3
Pont Du Gard
Visit another testament to the greatness of the Roman Empire - the highest aqueduct built in ancient times.
Day 4
St-Remy de Provence
Journey south to view the dramatic limestone cliffs and olive oil mills of the Chaine des Alpilles region. St-Remy is famous for its cuisine as well as Vincent van Gogh, who painted some of his most famous masterpieces here. Stroll past some of the vantage points for his paintings.
The charming town of Arles is as famous for its artistic history as for its Roman ruins. Vincent van Gogh once lived here and the inspiration for his paintings can be seen around every corner. It was also here that Venus of Arles, now in the Louvre in Paris, was discovered in 1651. Enjoy free time with a walk down L'Allee des Sarcophages, lined with 80 sarcophagi and tall poplar trees.
A visit in May (trip departing on 18th May 2008) adds a whole new dimension to your trip - a chance to experience rich Roma culture. In this merry month, Roma from all over the world flock to the tiny seaside town of Ste-Maries-de-la-Mer to celebrate their patron saint, Sara. Be prepared to witness colourful festivities, captivating flamenco performances as well as vibrant processions, as statues of Sara and Saint Marie are accompanied by chanting crowds into the sea (additional local payment applies).
Day 7
Camargue
Explore the Camargue marshes by bike. Don't miss the gorgeous pink flamingos, while pedalling along the sea dike to the elegant Gacholle lighthouse. In May, the little town of Stes-Maries-del-la-Mer bursts into life, with Roma from all over the world coming to worship St Sara, the patron saint of gypsies. With colourful processions and plenty of lively celebrations, this a great opportunity to live it up, while learning about Roma folklore and culture.
Enjoy a relaxing last day in the heart of Provence - why not stay a little longer to explore the beautiful countryside?
