With its steep cobbled streets, stunning architecture and paved squares, the 'jewel' of the Dalmatian coast bursts with history. Post-war restoration work has been extensive, and the views from the city walls - over terracotta roofs and out to a sparkling sea - are spectacular. There is plenty of time to explore the hidden treasures of the old town, or perhaps take a boat ride to the island of Lokrum, where Richard the Lionheart is said to have been shipwrecked. Nowadays Lokrum is the place to swim and sunbathe in near-seclusion.
With its pristine forests, tranquil inlets and character-filled vineyards, the island of Korcula gives its inhabitants plenty to be proud of. A visit to a local farm provides an opportunity to try Dalmatian meatloaf. Wash it down with travarica, a grappa-like drink, followed up with some traditional cakes for dessert. From here, amble downhill to the Korcula old town, where there is time to swim, visit local boutiques or just soak up the charm.
Days 5-7
Split
Roman Emperor Diocletian's retirement palace is Split's most imposing structure. From here explore the well-preserved basements under the city, as well as the Temple of Jupiter and the lively fish markets. If we're lucky, we might get the chance to join the locals singing traditional songs while relaxing in the peristyle courtyard.
